Rita Approaches
Well, as you can imagine, I have been glued to The Weather Channel since yesterday. I really think I'm as prepared as I can be. The latest indications are that the storm will make landfall a little to the east of Galveston, which is good for me. It means that my area, up on the northwest side of Houston, won't get the worst part of the storm, the part the media calls the "dirty side."
Of course, we'll see a lot of wind and rain and all I can do is to hope and pray that my house holds up and that the roof is firmly attached and stays that way throughout the storm.
It was a beautiful morning this morning, ironically. I took a walk around the neighborhood (instead of in front of the TV) and noted that finally some other neighbors appear to have taped windows etc. I even saw one house with plywood over the windows. Lots of houses not protected at all yet though. Even if we don't get the worst of the storm, it makes sense to take precautions.
I also got to meet some neighbors I hadn't met before and we made a pact to check on each other after the storm to make sure we're okay. One of the neighbors even had a lady with her that she sort of picked up in Walmart -- the lady and her family were evacuating from League City and by the time they reached Tomball this lady was seriously overheated. My neighbor (the one I just met) offered to let them come to her house, shower, have something to eat etc. which they did. The elderly lady though, took up my neighbor's offer to just stay with her while the rest of the family went on in a northwest direction. While I was chatting to them, the lady managed to get hold of them on her cell phone - they had made it out past Waco.
It's amazing how situations like this bring out the very best in people.
